Hot it's NOT but Why, see Red Banners and Neeps are us!

Oh my, that’s another week of 2023 done and dusted and once again we arrive at The Weekend. And guess what, it’s another Windy one! The Heatwave is still On Hold…

It’s quite amazing how these Low pressure systems are persistently driving their way into the UK when you would expect High pressure to be in place. So, what’s the cause of this roller coaster weather pattern? Well, allegedly it’s all due to an event that takes place out in the Pacific Ocean, called the El Niño, which they say has been affecting UK Weather for years and not only during the Summer. This is the Met Offices description of the event..

The name 'El Niño' is widely used to describe the warming of sea surface temperature that occurs every few years, typically concentrated in the central-east equatorial Pacific.

An El Niño is declared when sea temperatures in the tropical eastern Pacific rise 0.5 °C above the long-term average. El Niño is felt strongly in the tropical eastern Pacific with warmer than average weather. The effects of El Niño often peak during December; its name "the boy" is thought to have originated as "El Niño de Navidad" centuries ago when Peruvian fishermen named the weather phenomenon after the newborn Christ.

Back in July this was posted on a leading Weather App..

Scotland and the rest of the UK are set to experience "chaotic" weather as a result of El Nino. According to a leading meteorologist, Britain is heading into "unprecedented" territory due to the weather phenomenon which occurs every three to seven years.

And that’s why we are experiencing what most would describe as pretty awful summer weather (there was me thinking it was all due to the School Holidays). But on the other hand, those that rely on wind for their sports will think of it as a ‘God Send’ ! The weather will never please everyone and maybe we are lucky with wet and windy, rather than the dry and wild fires that other parts of Europe and the World are enduring.  Anyhow, short and sweet tonight as today has disappeared and I need to be out of here at a reasonable time. The evenings are drawing in really quickly now and I would like to catch just a tad of this Friday evening’s light (thanks for understanding Paul.. the 1500 is here and waiting for you.. see you in the morning!).

We are adding new kit to the website as quickly as we can but if you don’t see what you’re looking for Please do ask, as it’s likely that we do actually have it. There is a link from the old site to the new but if you are using a phone, you might not notice the Red Banner at the base of your screen, as it’s a link to take you to the new site. We will see if we can get it enlarged. Thanks to James Connor of Severne and Starboard windsurfing, who pointed it out. He was here to give us a quick run-down on the 2024 kit (if you thought Green sails were dodge, the new S1 is a beauty!) but sadly we cannot share any of it ,as no Pics to be shown on line just yet.  OK, let’s take a look at the weekends weather and tide times..

Saturday kicks off with a 15 -20kt Sou’West wind and by around 11am it should be 20-26kt. That might increase further during the afternoon but it won’t be as windy as last Saturday (famous last words) or as wet, in fact it says DRY at the moment. Tide is High at 09.20hrs and it is a tiny 4.8m Neep, so it won’t move up and down the beach that far. The side effects of these Neep tides are that they can make launching / landing a little difficult and you may experience strong side currents during the 3rd and 4th hours of the Tide cycle, as that is when the greatest amount of water ‘moves’. It also means.. no sandy beach for Dog walking!

Sunday is not so windy as Saturday but it will still be enough for on-water fun of some type, as the current wind speed is given as Sou’West 17-24kts. Tide is High at 10.27hrs on a 5.1m (slightly more water in the estuary for those wishing to Wing Foil). And once again.. DRY!

And that is it for another week. Thanks for taking the time to read it and if you have gained anything at all useful from it… I’m happy!

Have a cracker of a weekend and if there is an Event on that I should have mentioned.. PLEASE COMMENT.

Cheers!
