May Day! Fire and Films plus a Long Weekend

Friday evening and the first May Bank Holiday has arrived. I really cannot believe that we will be into the month of May on Monday but at least it’s going to be a LONG Weekend!

It’s also the one where we celebrate the modern ‘May Day’, with hoards of happy children twirling ribbons around the Maypole on every village green (as we do, in Little Britain) and if you like to go back a bit further, Beltane, which is the original Pagan Festival.  Fire has been involved with both but The Wickerman, which was an interesting film from 1973 (refreshed in 2013) should  YOU go back that far, brought the Beltane Fire Festival into everyone’s ‘view’. Not that people were ever..  no, I won’t ruin it in case you want to watch the movie but it was an impressive way of ‘re-lighting’ the original Briton’s celebration and bringing a form of Religion that is essentially nature based back into our islands culture. Personally, I just hope that the Fire element heats dear old Blighty up a bit, as it’s been in the chiller far too long now.

Actually, the forecast is looking better on the temperature front, with a possibility of 16°C plus over the weekend.. whoopee do..  but as at this point in time the winds are not looking particularly ‘exciting’ for the higher wind sports. If you want to kill the wind, organise a Demo and as Simon at 2XS has a Wing demo day on Saturday. So best thing we can do is to go for the Low wind option and say if anyone is itching to try an inflatable SUP and has a wetsuit of some type (or is prepared to purchase one), we can get you out on a Demo Board, from Fanatic, Gladiator, Red , O’Shea & STX. It’s going to be out on the sea this weekend, as normally we would also suggest a paddle on the river but as the tide times and heights are not playing ball, the sea is the better bet. If interested, give us a call on Saturday and we can go from there.
So, what is the forecast for the whole Long Weekend?

On Saturday, if you wish to believe the Met Office, we will have light winds from the East in the morning backing Sou’East in the afternoon 6 – 10Kts. Overcast but with the odd sunny spell and a top temp of 13°C.. NO RAIN.  Windguru agree on the wind but think 11°C is the best we will get. Tide is a Neap, High at 06.46hrs on a tiny 4.3m (19.33hrs for the evening High) hence not a lot of water in the estuary.
Sunday, the Met say winds from the Sou’East in the morning 6-10kts back Southerly in the afternoon 6-12kts (will bring small waves to play on!). Overcast with a top temp of 16°C  (no sunny spells shown) and the tide hitting its High at 08.03hrs on a 4.4m (20.47hrs in the evening). NO RAIN.
May the 1st Monday, we have a disagreement on directions. The Met say a Northerly wind in the morning 6 – 12kts with a Nor’West in the afternoon 7 – 15kts. Guru might be banking on the sea breeze kicking in, as they say Nor’West 6 -10kts first thing, backing West mid-morning 8-10kt and then accelerating to a West’Sou’West 13-16kts in the afternoon. As the air temp is given as 17°C
I would go with Guru, as we should see the SB or ‘Worthing Effect’ phenomenon kicking in around about ‘now’.  I do hope that the dear old Sea Mist, which can also occur at this time of year, holds off! Tide is High at 09.10hrs on a 4.8m, so the river may be usable. NO RAIN!  Heck, this is all just a forecast so ‘who knows’ what we will get..  any thoughts Bill?

And that’s your lot for this week and for April 2023.  As it’s a B-Hol, a quick reminder that the Megastore is open 9.30am – 5.30pm Saturday and then 10.00am – 4.00pm on Sunday and on Monday. We are still not sure what we are doing for the Coronation Bank Hols (next weekend, still no invite..) but will update you in the week.
Hope you all have a great weekend, may your God go with you and if I was you, avoid any invites to Wicker Parties.. Ta Ra.

NOTE. I had mentioned that Sam at Worthing Watersports is running a Duotone Kite event, which I indicated was
organised for Monday the 1st. This was incorrect, as it is in fact running Saturday the 6th 9.30 -16.30hrs, not 9.30 - 13.30hr as on the Duotone website. Apologies to Sam and anyone who changed their plans for MONDAY 1st !!
