Where to sail.. Piddinghoe Lake??

We are often asked where in our locality is a safe and easy location for newcomers and kids to learn or improve. Most people have heard of Hove Lagoon, Ardingly Resevoir or Westhampnett, but the one place that the majority of people look totally blank about is Piddinghoe. The lake is situated just outside of Newhaven on the Lewes road (click here for a map) and is a hidden gem in many ways. The lake is run by Newhaven and Seaford Sailing Club and you will have to become a member to gain access to the lake (which also allows you to launch from the sailing club on Seaford beach and use the clubs shower and BAR facilities..). Although it is quite small and can be a little crowded at times, it has good wind coverage and one of the best scenic backdrops in the area. It has also been the starting ground for many a talented windsurfer (ask Mathew Buzza, who runs the Club Mistral Centre in Mauritius, where he started his windsurfing career, and then the sadly missed star of UK Wave sailing Andy Funnell, who as far as I can remember also started off on The Pond..) and with the use the Sailing Club on the beach and one of the best wave spots on the south coast just up from there, this venue does offer it all. Membership is not that bad either (although you will be asked to perform the usual Club Duties from time to time, unless you Pay More not to of course..) at £120.00 for an Adult or £155 for a family membership.

Many thanks to Dave Manson for the pictures of his son, Jack (and himself) sailing on the lake. Jack is using a Pro Limit Junior Rig and David has promised me that his boom is now set at the correct height..it's a little low in the pictures ) .
